 05/27/05 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

  Watching the Clock at Steeda

The springs on your Mustang may appear to be simple bits of round wire wound in a spiral, but most enthusiasts know there's more to it than that. The material used and it's purity, the rate of the spring (expressed in pounds of force needed to compress the spring one inch), the number of coils in the spring itself and with the height of the spring are all factors that most folks are pretty familiar with. Those in the know can also tell you the difference between a linear spring rate, which requires the same amount of force to compress the spring though its length, or progressive rate springs, which require more force inch by inch as the spring compresses. But many, even some major manufacturers, didn't remember to 'watch the clock' as they made springs for the new 2005 Mustangs.

Properly clocked springs are available from Steeda Autosports for 2005 Mustangs to suit a variety of driving styles and budgets.
Clocking is a term used to describe the relationship of the ends of the spring to each other. Most springs, in fact all springs for 79-04 Mustangs, are clocked so that the spring is comprised of a number of full coils. You can visualize this by thinking of a clock set at 12 o'clock - both of the hands have gone around the dial and are lined up, one atop the other.

But on the 2005 Mustang, Ford engineers designed the car for springs that were clocked differently, ending with a half a turn. Like a clock set at 6 o'clock, the ends of these spring are 180 degrees out of phase, and this seemingly small difference can lead to big problems with your new Mustang.

Many online Mustang forums have been abuzz with chatter from dissatisfied customers who, after installing aftermarket springs in their new 'stang, were treated to unsettling clicks and pops resulting from the mis-match of the new springs with the Ford factory spring seat - a plastic part installed to help reduce NVH, which was designed to accept a properly clocked spring. When the springs are a half turn off, they create a torque on the plastic seat that causes the seat to separate and fail, resulting in annoying clicking and popping sounds.
For serious on track excursions, Steeda's Competition Spring Seats provide the ultimate in suspension control.

If you were unaware of spring clocking and it's importance with the new Mustang, you are not alone. Many spring manufacturers, even some of the biggies, missed this detail, but not Steeda. Thanks to our participation in the SEMA Technology Transfer Program, we received the correct specifications directly from the Ford engineers who designed the vehicle.

As a result, all of the springs we offer for the 2005 Mustang were made to our specifications, and have none of the problems you may have been hearing about. By starting with the proper design, we are able to engineer a range of springs that will all lower the car approximately one full inch. All are made from superior materials, and depending on your application, can enhance the stance of your 'stang and reduce weight without negatively affecting ride quality. Our competition springs trade a little of the factory ride softness for less brake dive and flatter cornering with out making your car ride like a buck-board.

To compliment the Steeda Competition Springs, Competition Upper Spring Seats are offered as a replacement for the factory plastic mounts. These parts are built to the same exacting tolerances as our famous Caster/Camber Plates and feature high-grade spherical bearings to ensure precise suspension control. These are recommended for competition use only, as they remove the cushioning effect of the plastic factory parts they replace, and as such will permit more NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) to be transmitted into the cockpit.

When it comes to modifying your Mustang, look to the leader in Ford performance for the parts that let  you get the job done right the first time, so that when the clock on the wall says it's time for Happy Hour, you'll have something to celebrate!
